The September 2026 NPI file lists 1,513 imaging organisations in California: 629 registered under the MRI or radiology clinic codes (133, or 9%, with the MRI-specific code) and 884 diagnostic-radiology organisations classified by name. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim is the largest market with 658 records, followed by Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario (177), San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont (149) and San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad (113). 7 records sit outside the metro areas listed below or alone in a small area; they are listed on this page.
Price context: a single-region MRI in California runs $600 to $1,800 cash at a freestanding centre, which is our own estimate. At hospitals it is measured, not estimated: a brain MRI runs $153 to $8,216 cash, median $2,307 against a median gross charge of $5,150, from 122 of the 169 California hospitals whose own price files we have read, out of 276 in the state, files dated to September 2026. A further 24 hospitals publish their chargemaster unchanged as a “cash price”, up to $20,680, and are not in that range. Bay Area and LA imaging centres are competitive; UCSF and Cedars hospitals at the top end.
